The Director of BASTA Legal Services Director will work closely with the Project Director, the BASTA Research and Policy Director, BASTA paralegals, and TRLA housing attorneys to support the tenants association, community education, and policy efforts. This is a hybrid position and is funded under the VOCA grant, from the Attorney General’s Office to represent and assist survivors of domestic, sexual, and dating violence and human trafficking. Attorney primarily advocates for victims of crime under a VOCA grant in the areas of family law and injunctions for protection against domestic violence, however, practice may also include additional substantive areas of law if the client meets criteria for being a victim of crime under grant criteria.  On occasion, clients who are not crime victims are represented as well. Promise of Justice Initiative | Civil Attorney (New Orleans, LA) [$65,000 - $87,000]

PJI’s legal department is nimble and strives to meet the moment we’re in. It has a track record of securing landmark wins, including Ramos v. Louisiana, in which the United States Supreme Court found that non-unanimous jury convictions (Jim Crow Juries) were unconstitutional. The PJI civil litigation team has spent a decade fighting off executions in Louisiana through litigation challenging lethal injection and gassing as cruel and unusual methods of killing people. The team is also currently litigating forced labor in prisons, the detention of incarcerated people past their release dates, and the deprivation of proper medical care for people in prison, among other challenges. This position requires a commitment and belief in the ethos that our clients and their families are valuable, have answers, and should be consulted and heard because they are humans and because what we learn from our clients impacts the strength of evidence and influences litigation strategy.
