The Family Representation Unit Staff Attorney will help launch a parent representation program. The Family Representation Unit will aim to ensure a fair and equitable child welfare system, by leading, administering, and supporting the effective delivery of multidisciplinary counsel/representation and services to indigent parents facing child welfare intervention in the parent-child relationship, including dependency, neglect, abuse, and termination of parental rights matters. The Bazelon Center is always seeking talented law students, who are committed to social justice and interested in promoting and protecting the rights of adults and children with mental illnesses, for summer and school-year internships. The Center’s staff work on U.S. Supreme Court and other federal and state appellate cases, bring impact litigation at the trial court level, engage in policy advocacy in Congress and at federal agencies, and provide education and training on the rights of people with mental illnesses. The Center’s attorneys are considered experts in systems reform litigation. The Housing Project is our grass-roots legal advocacy project that addresses the rental housing crisis through renter-centered research, education, and advocacy.  We provide the full spectrum of direct legal services as part of our advocacy program.  We like to challenge unlawful practices and see the law enforced. Office of the Attorney General for the District of Columbia (OAG) | Deputy Attorney General (Washington, DC) [$180,000 - $190,000]

The Deputy Attorney General will manage and provide oversight for the Legal Counsel Division (LCD) which is responsible for providing legal advice on a broad range of legal issues to the Attorney General and officials and employees in the Executive Office of the Mayor, District agencies, the Council of the District of Columbia, Advisory Neighborhood Commissions, and instrumentalities of the District government. The Division regularly advises on sensitive, complex, and high-priority issues involving constitutional law, statutory construction, the Home Rule Act, administrative law, appropriations, and other legal matters particular to the unique status of the District. It also reviews all draft legislation introduced on the Mayor’s behalf, all draft rulemakings from the Executive Branch, and all Council-enrolled bills presented to the Mayor for legal sufficiency to obviate legal objections to them. In addition, the Division is responsible for drafting legal opinions of the Attorney General and performing other duties assigned by the Attorney General or Chief Deputy Attorney General. The Office of the Attorney General for the District of Columbia (OAG) is seeking candidates for the position of Deputy Attorney General for the Public Advocacy Division (PAD). PAD protects the public interest through civil enforcement actions, with a particular emphasis on protecting vulnerable and disadvantaged District residents. PAD enforces the District’s civil rights, environmental, workers’ rights, anti-fraud, consumer protection, housing conditions, elder protection, antitrust, and non-profit corporations statutes. PAD also works with advocacy partners and state and federal agencies to address national issues that affect those living or working in the District. PAD is divided into five sections: Housing and Environmental Justice, Antitrust and Nonprofit Enforcement, Workers’ Rights and Antifraud, Civil Rights and Elder Justice, and Consumer Protection. Each section is managed by a Chief, as well as an Assistant Chief for some sections. Each Chief reports to the Deputy.  With the help of two Assistant Deputies and a staff assistant, the Deputy manages and oversees the operations of PAD, which is comprised of more than 60 attorneys and more than 25 professional staff. Public Justice | Debtors’ Prison Project Staff Attorney (Oakland, CA, Washington, DC or Remote) [$109,350 DOE]

Public Justice’s Debtors’ Prison Project (DPP) works to shrink the criminal legal system by ending the criminalization of poverty. Working with allies and impacted communities, DPP uses litigation, advocacy, and education to ensure people are not punished simply because they can’t pay and to stop governments and companies from treating people impacted by the system as a revenue source.
The DPP Staff Attorney will report to DPP Director Leslie Bailey and may be based in Washington, D.C., Oakland, CA, or remotely. Because Public Justice handles litigation and advocacy nationally, the position will require travel. This is a full-time, exempt position. Among other responsibilities, the Staff Attorney will investigate and develop new DPP cases from inception through appeal, including factual investigation, drafting and submitting public records requests, identifying clients, conducting legal research and analysis, community outreach, and helping build a narrative campaign; and will serve as lead counsel or co-counsel in the full range of litigation tasks involved in DPP cases, including legal research and analysis, discovery, briefing, oral arguments, client communications, settlement negotiations; and drafting or coordinating the drafting of amicus briefs. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in civil rights class actions, public defense, or other litigation challenging injustices in the criminal legal system.
