The Equal Justice Litigation Program is The Impact Fund's innovative
direct litigation program. Through this project, The Impact Fund
provides strategic leadership for effective equal justice litigation.
In coalition with other small firms and non-profits, we spearhead
litigation which will create the blueprint for similar class actions
throughout the country. Together, we will build the capacity of
all participants, with a vision of social justice, to play a major
role in impact litigation.
OUR MODEL
The Equal Justice Litigation Program identifies and targets the
industries and companies where litigation offers the potential to
open a significant number of jobs or other economic opportunities
to disadvantaged communities. In 2001, The Impact Fund filed Dukes
v. Wal-Mart Stores, to challenge company-wide sex discrimination.
Working strategically with grassroots non-profits and civil rights
firms, we intend to change the discriminatory practices of this
industry leader. In addition, in August 2004, The Impact Fund followed
up with a nationwide, glass ceiling case against Costco.
Our model relies upon the most effective use of resources of small
firms and non-profits challenging civil rights violations. With
the benefit of new technologies, and the large network of contacts
and resources developed by The Impact Fund, we leverage our resources
to mount the challenges that can make a difference. This model builds
on the experience of The Impact Fund's Executive Director, Brad
Seligman, and Litigation Counsel, Jocelyn
D. Larkin. Both attorneys have litigated scores of civil rights
class actions, leading to some of the largest Title VII and ADA
class judgments ever.
OUR WORK
In addition to litigation,The Impact
Fund provides training programs for
practitioners and students on various aspects of class action and
impact litigation. The Impact Fund also maintains an active amicus
docket and frequently publishes articles
on a broad range of issues affecting civil and human rights.
